Ever since the release of Super Smash Bros Melee, many fans have try to make the Smash series a real competitive fighting game. However, smash was never intentionally designed to be as such. In fact, the creator of smash himself has even questioned whether Smash could be considered a fighting game. For this very reason, it is believed that Nintendo never acknowledges the competitive scene of Smash because they don’t want it to be treated as a fighting game. Nintendo has been notorious for interfering with players from creating competitive tournaments that have a large budget and prize pool money. They’ve even goes as so far as to stop other third parties from investing in the smash esports such as RedBull and Twitch.
Now after many years of dealing with low prize pools in tournaments, Smash will finally be getting its own world tour circuit. With the help of VGbootcamp and Smash Con, the Smash community has put together a grassroots championship tournament with a prize pool of $250K.
